National Parks

Kalbarri National Park
Proclaimed in 1963, Kalbarri National Park covers 18 096 ha. It is centred on the lower reaches of the Murchison River which originates near Peak Hill 80km north of Meekatharra. Euros, red and western grey kangaroos and rock wallabies together with nine other species of indigenous mammals are known to occur here. Emus are frequently seen on the sandplains while over 170 bird species have been recorded.

KaIbarri National Park is justly famous for the diversity and brilliance of its wildflowers.

While the eucalypts typify the Australian landscape, the shrub and heath plants provide the greatest spectacle in springtime when, in full bloom, they paint the countryside a mosaic of colour.

Mount Augustus National Park
Mount Augustus is the world's largest monad rock and is twice the size of Ayers rock.

Most visitors drive in via Gascoyne Junction. TheJunction is the centre of the desert merino fine wool industry, and it's small (and only) pub comes straight out of olden droving days. It doubles as a General Store for the tiny town and passing travellers. Very important! Don't miss the last cold beer this side of Meekatharra!

The trip to the Mount from Carnarvon is 480 kms, so allow a full day's travelling for sightseeing.

The area is fascinating in geology and wildlife one ornithologist counted more than 100 species of birds at nearby Edithanna Pool in just two days. This place is also a great spot for swimming, as is Catle Pool. On the southern side of the rock are several sign-posted Aboriginal rock paintings and engravings.

Coach tours are available from Perth and Carnarvon.

Mount -Lesueur National Park
Situated east of Leeman/Greenhead, and one of the most diverse and rich flora areas in Western Australia. Dramatic land forms created by the Lesueur Fault and Cockleshell Gully formation. Naturally occurring coal can be found on the surface in some areas. 4WD essential, no lighting of fires, and care should be taken not to spread jarrah dieback.

Alexander Morrison National Park
West, off the Midlands Scenic Way, along the Green Head Road. The Alexander Morrison National Park is an area of natural beauty featuring fine displays of local flora and fauna.

Tathra National Park
42km east of Carnamah. Preserved for the conservation of flora and fauna.
