Avalon Beach Sydney. New South Wales
Avalon is one of the more casual suburbs in Sydney, with a holiday atmosphere, smiling faces, excellent food, (particularly if your inclined toward
a vegie dish) and a large variety of interesting shops to poke around in. Named after the legendary island where King Arthur
was carried to after his last battle, Picturesque hills overlayed with native gum trees surround the suburb providing excellent views over Pittwater and the ocean.
From the shops at Avalon Hudson Parade advances west to the calm waters of Pittwater at Clareville. There are barbecue areas, swimming baths and parks, perfect for a quiet picnic.
The road winds up from Clareville to Bilgola Plateau which offers spectacular views of the peninsula and across Kur-ing-gai National park
Beaches
Avalon Beach is a beautiful curving surf beach which once had large sandhills which extended back to what is now a recreation reserve.
A popular beach for surfers it is patrolled during the summer months and has a swimming pool at the Southern end. Toilets
and showers are provided in the surfclub.
Bilgola Beach to the south is which sits at the bottom of a pretty gully covered in Cabbage Tree
Palms. Bilgola is patrolled by lifeguards in the summer and has one of the cleaner baths at the southern end. There are toilets
and showers at the baths and the surfclub.
Fishing
The rocks between Newport and Bilgola are an excellent snapper fishing area when the seas settle after a a big southerly blow.
There are a few deep gutters and holes between Avalon and Bilgola which can provide snapper, drummer, bream and ludrerick.
Hole-in-the-Wall at the northern end of Avalon is known as one of Sydney's best if not the best snapper fishing location. Named from
a natural arch which was disintegrated by a huge gale in 1886, this spot is also the location of a top luderick fishing gutter. Access is by a
safe and easy track down the cliff face.
